Yesterday, there was a bit of a mix of the tried and tested guaranteed 'must see tourist thing' and the 'go down the side street and visit somthing not in the guide book but a very good tip...'
So this is a bit of a tourist book versus an independent internet/tip advice situation blog...
A bit of a late start as....
Was a tad hungover after a night at the Beauty Bar, where you can get a cocktail(mine was called a Shampoo)and a manicure (nails painted 'real red' - surprise, surprise) at the same time for only $2 extra. Thanks to Lisa the lovely manicurist from Ohio.
So started off lateish at the Empire State Building (tourist guide must see) on day that was forcasted as 'intermittent sunny spells'...(I think that phrase is just a weather forecasters way of playing it safe). The weather didn't detract from what is probably one of the most iconic and amazing views I have ever seen. The Empire State is definitely a 'must do' thing if you're ever in New York, it costs $20 and they do try to sell you extras on the way up like photos and visit to an 'imax experience' and the exit as expected, ultimately leads you through the souvenier shop....but you can't beat that view...
After this, followed a very good tip (thanks Ma) to go to a dairy free, wheat free, gluten free kitsch cup cake store, called Babycakes, as I'm a lactose intolerance type person... Cupcakes I can eat!. I know I can hear you saying but..."what is left?? Well yummy baked goodness is all...brilliant!!
After a huge cupcake purchase went to a chilled out cafe close by, called 88 Orchard and stopped for coffee and nibbles.

Had olives and some bread (as I get shocking rage when I don't eat often enough, it's very scary and best avoided - aka Venice pepperamigate)the atmosphere was relaxed and the coffee, bread and olives(they marinate on site) were so yummy and reasonably priced. Another plus the waitress was super friendly and very helpful giving clear directions back to the nearest subway stop, as there was a space cadet issue going on (with me, not the waitress ;)).
Then it was off home to eat the cupcake booty...
So today is either going to be statue of Liberty (if not sold out)or independent art gallery...but still considering whether to leave the guidebook at home (rebelling against the ways of the bossy blonde).
Oh and I have started warming up to the New Yorkers...it was bound to happen, how can you not love people with that attitude who are that direct?- it's kismit....
