What I did last week on my Summer Holidays 2. Chilli dogs, Calder and Cartoons

Favourite day: First Tuesday of the month.

Go on...ask me why.  Free day in most art galleries in most cities in the U.S.  When travelling on a budget this day is a bonus.

The SF Moma cost $18 dollars for entry, which I could then spend on the most massive chilli dog for lunch at Mel's Drive-In. :) Last time I was in SF I went to Mel's and just loved it, it is just so kitsch and the geek in me (no not in that way..how rude) just enjoys looking at all the black and white photos of George Lucas on set the waiters/ess uniforms and the 60's juke box.  The food typical American Diner food comes in huge portions with refillable iced tea or homemade lemonade... "love it"(this is said in an annoyingly perky sing song voice)

After completely stuffing myself full of chilli dog fries and homemade lemonade, it was off to waddle down to the SF Moma to get me some culture (being Australian I know this is ironic).  I love, love, love the SF Moma, the building, the rooftop sculpture garden the huge variation of their art pieces, the achitecture and the way it draws in the light it is all just breathtaking.

I realise I am starting to become more and more like my mother in this way.  I can remember her justifiable anguish at me sleeping on long car journeys and missing all the beauty of the gorgeous and diverse Australian scenery, trying to get me to wake up and telling me what I was missing.  Thank you for instilling this in me, this ability to see beauty in a myriad of places and not just roll my eyes, sigh and scuff my shoes like an angsty teenager.  Even in doggies in bags...see below..hee it's a dog and it's in a bag!!!

Back to the art....at the SF Moma right now, it's their 75th anniversary, this was very interesting as they had some of the purchases they have made in the last 75 years, it is interesting to see what was definable as 'modern art' and how this has evolved in three quarters of a century.  They additionally had an exhibition called from 'Calder to Warhol'from the Fisher Collection, which was huge, ecclectic and incredible.  I must admit though I am becoming less a fan of Warhol as the years go on.....hmmm. What does this mean??

After the SF Moma I whipped into the Cartoon Art Museum which is literally just around the corner from the Moma, it isn't a huge museum but it was really interesting to walk around and I did love Nina Paley's cartoons 'Nina's Adventures', which made me guffaw out loud numerous times.  Being totally arted and farted out (damn chilli dog) I headed home attempting to squeeze the butt cheeks together to ensure my fellow train passengers didn't suffer my over abundance of internal culture....  You can take the girl out of Australia but.....now part 3...
